Sea Kayaking:
Back Ferry
Colby Blewett
Back Ferries are performed exactly like a forward ferry, but in reverse. To read how to perform a forward ferry, click on link below. The back ferry is much more difficult for many reasons. 1) You can’t see where you’re going. 2) Your paddle strokes will be reversed and they don’t have the same power as forward strokes. 3) It is harder to judge your angle when facing downstream. Even though they are difficult, back ferries can come in handy. Here are some extra tips. 1) Look over your shoulder toward the current to get an idea of when to place your strokes. 2) Be ready to utilize some powerful reverse sweep strokes to keep your ferry angle. 3) Learn to use quick bow rudder moves to make corrections in ferry angle (similar to back surfing rudders)
