The River City Canoe Club has been in existence under one name or another for well over 6O years. Initially formed to encourage canoeing on the Whanganui River, the club taught the art of canoe and kayak building as well as the skills of paddling these canvas boats. In more recent times with the advent of first fibre glass then plastic boats, the old kayak and canoe building crafts have been put aside as boats are now purchased ready to paddle. These modern boats have opened up a whole range of rivers that formerly were thought impossible to paddle. Even on the Whanganui River, plastic boats have improved safety, enjoyment, because of the toughness of the material used in construction.

RCCC exists to promote paddling. Club members recognise paddling as an immensely enjoyable activity, but one requiring the acquisition of many skills in order to progress and to cope with the increasing demands of the wilder rivers. But the club isnÕt only about thrill-seeking. Recreational paddling on the Whanganui and Rangitikei Rivers is a regular and enjoyable pursuit, and to this end the club owns for hire a fleet of canoes kayaks suited to both family paddling as well as the more demanding white water activity. Club members are involved on a weekly basis instructing newer members in the basics as well as the higher skills of paddling.
