The roof rack is a key component on any adventurer's car. It
makes toting boats, boards and bikes from place to place much
easier. And you can dial in your roof rack for your specific gear
with a variety of accessories. Yakima's Boatlocker, at $49, is one
of my favorites.
The lock is an uber-flexible 10-foot cable that easily fits
around whitewater boats, sea kayaks and canoes. It works on any
rack system: round, square and factory crossbars, making it a great
investment whether you have a Yakima rack or not. (It's also useful
for locking your boat to trees and other large, stable objects--for
when you're camping or out of room in your garage.) The floating
lock also makes it practical for locking other valuables, like
mountain bikes, for those odd days when you don't want to
paddle.
But perhaps the coolest feature of Yakima's Boatlocker is the
PaddleCuff. There are two of these handy little cuffs, which attach
to the paddle shaft. Thread the cable through the cuffs and lock
with a key. The Cuff works on most paddles including 2-piecers,
offering better protection to the blade from your dog's teeth than
the back seat.
