Mountain Hardwear, a company known for stylie gear that
performs, has rolled out a very light way to sleep. When packed in
its stuff sack, the Mountain Hardwear Superlight Phantom 32D
($230-255) sleeping bag is about the size of a football. Rated at a
crucial 32° Fahrenheit and weighing in at a featherweight 1
lb. 5 oz., it's the perfect bag for an adventurous life...in warmer
weather.
Besides being tiny and light, this 800-fill down bag comes in 3
sizes— small, medium, large— so you can tailor the bag
to your physical stature. The other bags in the Superlight Series
come in at 0°, 15° and 45° so you can pick the one
that fits your needs for the majority of the trips you do.
I used this bag on a recent 3-day paddling trip (in mid-May at
4,500 feet) and I loved how small it packed— easy to roll and
easy to hide. However, right before dawn, when the mercury dropped
a bit, I got a little cold and it wasn't down to 32° yet. In
the future, I'll use this strictly as a summer bag or when saving
weight is my number one goal.
The only downside is the zipper, which is only 3/4-length. For
those of you who like to unzip a bag from the bottom to keep the
toes cool, or zip bags together to play footsies with your honey,
you're out of luck. However, being lucky enough to use a sleeping
bag that weighs less than a box of cereal will undoubtedly help you
get over it.
